XD Nothing wrong with popular pairings at all (I do like a few myself), but I know what you mean about liking them differently from the norm in fics.

You know, most of my fandoms have always favored slash. In FF, it's different. At least on LJ (old school fandom was entirely different). I mean, slash is favored, but het is very dominate. I attribute this to the host of awesome female characters FF has produced (though we may not all agree on which ones are actually the awesome ones...). But favoring dynamics before sex, well. That's my kind of thinking. :D
